Osseous anatomy of the orbital apex.

چکیده
(Fig 4D). The osseous anatomy of the orbital apex may be difficult to conceptualize because of the different shapes and orientations of the optic canal, superior and inferior orbital fissures, and foramen rotundum. However, knowing this anatomy is crucial to evaluate complex fractures, tumors, and inflammatory processes involving the orbital apex. Evaluating osseous anatomy of the orbital apex with computed tomography (CT) requires knowledge of its three-dimensional appearance (1–8). The optic canal forms an angle of about 458 with the sagittal plane of the head, slightly tapers anteriorly, and is bounded medially by the body of the sphenoid bone, superiorly by the superior root of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone, inferolaterally by the optic strut (that is, the inferior root of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone), and laterally by the anterior clinoid process (Fig 1). Inferolateral to the optic canal and separated from it by the optic strut is the superior orbital fissure, a gap between the greater and lesser wings of the sphenoid bone that is somewhat comma-shaped, appearing bulbous inferiorly and thin superolaterally (Fig 1). The fissure’s bulbous part is located anterior to the cavernous sinus. Just inferior and posterior to the superior orbital fissure is the foramen rotundum, a parasagittally oriented thin channel at the upper part of the base of the sphenoid bone, which has a trough-shaped posterior configuration (Fig 1). The foramen rotundum communicates posteriorly with the middle cranial fossa and anteriorly with the upper part of the pterygopalatine fossa. The pterygopalatine fossa and the inferior orbital fissure have a unique relationship. The inferior orbital fissure, its long axis forming an angle of about 458 with the head’s sagittal plane, is located between the lateral wall and

Background & Aims: The orbital cavity is an important anatomic structure in the face. It is in close connection with the skull, paranasal sinuses, and the nose. Precise knowledge of the orbital cavity dimensions can be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases associated with the orbital cavity. Due to the lack of adequate research on orbital size in Iran and the city of Kerman, the ai...
متن کاملThree-dimensional and topographic relationships between the orbital margins with reference to assessment of eyeball protrusion
This study investigated the topographic relationships among the eyeball and four orbital margins with the aim of identifying the correlation between orbital geometry and eyeball protrusion in Koreans. Three-dimensional (3D) volume rendering of the face was performed using serial computed-tomography images of 141 Koreans, and several landmarks on the bony orbit and the cornea were directly marke...
متن کاملAnatomy of the orbital apex and cavernous sinus on high-resolution magnetic resonance images.
Diseases of the orbital apex and cavernous sinus usually present with involvement of multiple cranial nerves, corresponding to the complex anatomy of the region. In nontraumatic disorders, magnetic resonance imaging is the diagnostic modality of choice. However, its capabilities can be fully used only with thorough knowledge of the complicated topographic relationships in this region. This arti...
متن کاملEvaluation of Root Canal Morphology and Root Apex Anatomy of Mandibular Premolars in an Iranian Population: an ex-vivo study
Objectives Adequate knowledge about canal anatomy is necessary for clinicians to prevent any damage to the periodontium. The aim of this study was to evaluate the canal and apical complexities of the mandibular first and second premolars in an Iranian population. Methods One-hundred mandibular first (n=50) and second (n=50) premolars were collected. After access cavity preparation, 2% methylen...
